There are plans to arrest Rivers Chief Judge – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has raised fresh alarm that there are plans to arrest some senior judges in the state.

The Governor also said the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Adama Lamikanra Iyaye is one of the targets.

Wike in his speech to mark the commencement of the 2016-2017 Legal year in the state said he would resist any attempt to arrest or intimidate the judicary in his state.

He disclosed that unknown armed men were sighted in the home of tbe Chief Judge of the state at the wee hours of the night sometimes this week.

He asked the Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS in the state to investigate the identities of the said armed men.

The Governor also took a swipe at the National Judicial Council, NJC, and the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, for bowing to pressure and allowing Judges and senior Judicial officers to be prosecuted by the Federal government.

He harped on the essential need for the independence of the Judiciary as an arm of government.

Wike also criticised the anti-corruption war of the federal government, stressing that it was lopsided and targeted at some people.

“The Judiciary must be convinced that the Law must take its toll on everybody, including the weak and the powerful.

“Unfortunately, recent happenings in the politiy has shown devious erosion of not only the rule of Law but also the Independence of the Judiciary.

“There is no reasonable Nigerian that does not support the on-going fight against corruption but it has become one of our challenges that undermines our potential for accelerated development.

“The provocative invasion and subsequent arrest and detention some certain judges and Justices of the Supreme Court at the dead of the night cannot be justified as appropriate in a decent society,” Wike said
