Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has revealed that over three million almajiris from the North and some neigbouring countries live in the state.
Speaking at the Kaduna Economic and Investment Summit, the governor said a recent survey carried out in the state established the huge number.
He said, “In Kano, we undertook a survey and we found out that we have more than three million almajiris. What we discovered from our survey is that many of these almajiris come from Niger Republic, some from Chad, Northern Cameroon and some from other states of the North West.”
According to him, there was need for northern states to come together and have a common synergy to introduce a common legislation, preventing the movement of school-age children from one place to another.
Zamfara governor, Abdulhazeez Yari on his part, said Northwest integration was important.
“We have advantage than any other zone in the country when it comes to agriculture.
We have the land, we have the people, we are the most populous zone, so we have to take advantage of that,” he said.
