Senator Buhari Abdulfatai representing Oyo North Senatorial district has lamented over the poor treatment of Traffic Warden, who are integral part of the Nigeria Police.

He said this was despite the fact that they carried out special and all important assignments of traffic control and other activities.

Speaking on Thursday after plenary with parliamentary correspondents, he explained that Traffic Warden was established in 1974, but could not compete with other para-military organizations, which were established after them for lack of recognition.

“If you know the history of Traffic Warden, you realise that the bill to that effect was important for two reasons. They were established in 1974, that is over 40 years ago but the Federal Roads Safety and the Civil Defence have overshadowed it”, he stressed.

Buhari lamented that his personal investigation revealed that lack of enabling laws had inhibited their growth to the extent that they had 3 ASPs, and 9 Inspectors throughout the federation, despite that some of them were well read.

According to him, he would make sure section 59 – 69 of Police Act was repealed so that the Traffic Warden can have a voice in the system.
