The Ondo State House of Assembly led by the impeached Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, has suspended the activities of the newly-elected President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, in the state.
The Oleyelogun-led Assembly took the decision at a plenary presided over by the impeached speaker, following a petition sent to the house by some aggrieved members of the union.
According to the lawmakers, it became imperative for the house to deliberate and look into the crisis rocking the union for timely resolution.
After deliberations in the hallowed chamber on the issue, the house committee on Ethics and privileges headed by Hon. Jamiu Maito was subsequently saddled with the responsibility to look into the matter, with a two-week ultimatum to report to the house.
The Assembly also directed security operatives to take over the State Secretariat of the Union located at Ilesa Garage area of Akure, and ordered that the officers stay away from the secretariat pending when the issue would be resolved.
Reacting to the development, the newly-elected State President of NULGE, Comrade Bola Taiwo said the lawmakers have no constitutional right to intervene in the union.
He insisted that any aggrieved member of the union has the right to protest or petition, noting that the national body would address such situation in the interest of members.
Comrade Taiwo urged the lawmakers to settle the crisis in the Assembly rather than stepping into the union’s affairs.
Meanwhile, the Assembly’s decision has led to tension in the state secretariat of the union and among its members across the 18 local government areas.
