Cult activities have taken more dangerous dimensions as scores of suspected cults members have been recently killed in Calabar, Cross River state capital.
Tragedy continued in the last few weeks as several members of the deadly confraternity groups ranging from Vikings, Mafians and KKK spilt more blood in the city and other major towns in the state.
As at last counts, more than four suspected cultists were reportedly killed along hot-spot places in Calabar South while the rampage in some areas of Calabar Municipality were curtailed as the officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS intervened.
According to DAILY POST investigations, some of the affected hot spots include; Ebito, Mayne Avenue, Orok Orok, Chamley, Bedwell, Watt Market Axis,Ekpo Abasi, Atakpa, Atu and Goldie by Mount Zion amongst others.
But State Commissioner of Police CP Hafiz Inuwa, who spoke on phone in Calabar, said the Nigerian Police are on top of the matter as he assured the people of Cross River peace.
CP Inuwa added that he and his team were having sleepless night just to ensure that the hoodlums are arrested and dealt with according to the law.
“The problem at hand is classified into two, the inter and the intra-fight between the cultists who have refused to embrace peace in Cross River State”.
“The inter-cult fight is coming from those whom we detained their leaders, and as their leaders are in custody, the junior ones keep fighting themselves and so on. Meanwhile, the intra-cult fight is coming from the different rival groups, like the Axe men vs the Vikings which have been a tradition since time”
“But with that, the police is doing all it best and peace and calm will return to the state as we go fishing out the perpetrators. Also, I urge the youths to embrace innovation in other to develop the state and the country at large. Fighting and killing will instead render our society wealth less”, CP Inuwa said.
The cult operations started about a month ago and CP Inuwa insists only one person was killed, not four as reported.
Speaking, a business man (name withheld) who owns a shop at Goldie by Mount Zion, disclosed his unforgettable experience which could have led to his death.
He said: “I will travel back to my State until peace returns to Calabar. They came to my compound last night, looking for their victim, but unfortunately for them, the guy was nowhere to be found.
“Then they started robbing every room in the compound. I tried opening my door to run, thinking they’ll also break-in, but thank God for me, the door refused to open, and that was the time they decided to leave.
“I can’t continue here again, the tension is too much and before I get killed, I’ll relocate to my hometown momentarily until peace returns to the streets of Calabar, then I’ll come back. For this is where my business thrive”.
