Teenager faces trial over alleged cultism, escape from lawful custody

A teenager, Godwin Madu, on Tuesday appeared at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State over alleged membership of an unlawful society and displaying of dangerous weapons.

Madu, whose address was not given, is charged with three-count charge of membership of an unlawful society, displaying of dangerous weapons and escaping from lawful custody.

NAN reports that the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept.5 at 3:00 p.m. in Igbonla area of Shibiri, Lagos.

Okuoimose said the defendant, who organised and managed an unlawful society, willfully damaged a police handcuff and escaped from lawful custody.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Sections 43, 51 and 106 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate Lazarus Hotepo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Hotepo adjourned the case until Oct. 23 for mention.
