Senator Emmanuel Bwacha representing Taraba South senatorial district, has lamented that Taraba South has been fully taken over by kidnappers, saying that they operate at will without challenge from security operatives.

The lawmaker said there was the need for an alternative protection of lives and properties of citizens, saying security agents are handicapped.

Speaking during Senate plenary through Order 42 against the backdrop of spate of kidnappings in Taraba, he insisted that the situation has degenerated to a level where kidnappers operate in broad-day light.

“Even in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, armed gunmen move around in broad-day light without challenge from the security agents.

“They have their informants and they will attack and kidnap anyone only for the person to be taken to the bush for ransom.”

The lawmaker further explained that a great number of kidnap victims were still in the custody of their captors, who are demanding huge sums of money for ransom.

Bwacha urged the National Assembly to hasten laws that would provide alternative protection of citizens rather than relying on unworkable security system as it was.

Commending the Inspector General of Police, Bwacha said the IGP inherited security challenges that were beyond his capability.

He revealed that it took the intervention of the Inspector General of Police to stop a planned protest he was a part of, on Wednesday.

“I must commend the IG, we were ready for a protest on insecurity in Taraba today, but he stopped it and explained reasons we should not protest and it was reasonable that we stopped the planned protest,” the senator said.
