Tambuwal to tap from women’s expertise in running of government

The Sokoto State government will continue to rely on the expertise of women and other vulnerable groups in the running of affairs of the ‎state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said.

“Despite cultural inhibitions, we believe our women have a lot to offer and we will go to extra length to get the best among them to render quality service to our people,” the Governor said at the weekend when he received Mr. Sentel Barnes, the Country Director of the International Republican Institute (IRI) ‎who paid a working visit to Sokoto.

He said his administration had initiated programmes that will empower women, youths and persons with disabilities educationally and economically, adding that since he came to power, the issue of healthcare had been at the front burner with women and children being the top beneficiaries.

The Governor said at present, the Chief Justice of Sokoto State is a woman, and that there are other women who have held sensitive positions and left indelible marks ‎in the history of the state.

He said his administration will continue to engage women because they have much to offer.

While commending the IRI for working to strengthen democratic institutions in Africa, Tambuwal said their efforts will help promote equality and good governance ‎in the country.

Earlier in his remarks, Barnes said Sokoto is one of IRI’s focal states where programmes that will support political parties, civic institutions, open elections and democratic governance have been implemented.

He said they are committed to promoting the participation of marginalised groups in politics ahead of the forthcoming local government elections slated for January in the state.
