Take protests to executive, judiciary, not only NASS – Shehu Sani

Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, has asked protesters to be courageous in taking protests to the executive and the judiciary in search of justice.

He stated this when the executives of Students Union Government, SUG, of Bayero University, Kano paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, saying that protests should not be selective by marching just to the National Assembly.

“Young people should not be selective in their quest for justice. As you have the will and courage to occupy the Parliament, you should also have the courage to occupy the executive or judiciary also,” he said.

He said democracy was never achieved on the platter of gold at any point in time, noting that if any arm of government takes the people for granted by not providing dividends of democracy, people should confront them from revolutionary perspective.

Sani admonished that Nigerians should not allow their attention to be diverted into believing that one arm of government was better than the other.

He chided those sponsoring protests for their selfish reasons, adding that once protesters are sponsored, the essence of the protest has been defeated.

In what he described as ‘commercialisation of protests’ in Nigeria, he wondered how young people could offer themselves for political mercantilism who use and dump them at the end of the day.

“Protesters are paid peanut to go to the National Assembly, what about the executive and Judicial arm of government?”

“If one arm of government fails, all arms have failed.”

He urged the people to direct their attention on their state governors who have collected over $200 millions each since last year, but have done nothing.

According to him, who ever has offered himself for political office, has offered himself for criticism, noting that no political office holders should be a Lord unto himself.

In his response, President, Students Union Government, SUG, Bayero University Kano explained that many young Nigerians were toeing the part of activism because of injustice in the system.

He commended the lawmakers for mentoring some of the younger ones in the art of activism.
