Suspected robbers kill night guard in Benin


Suspected armed robbers on Monday murdered a 52-year-old night guard simply identified as Abdulahi, in a phone shop on airport road, Benin City.

Abdulahi, a father of three in his attempt to stop the robbers who had tried to gain entry into the shop was overpowered.

The robbers, according to The Punch, tied his hands legs and mouth with a piece of cloth, leaving him to suffocate to death before they fled.

The victim, a native of Auchi, Etsako west local government area of Edo state was said to be on duty with another guard who was identified only as Austin.

Speaking on the incident, one of the workers at the phone shop where the incident happened said when they resumed business at about 9:00 am; ‎the victim was seen lying lifeless within the premises of the building housing the shop.

Lamenting the death of the guard, his wife, Mrs. Abdullahi, said her husband’s death means the beginning of hard life and suffering for her.

She said, “It was when I was told that someone died that I knew that it was my husband.

“They have put me into suffering, Look at me? Where will I start from?”‎ she grieved. ‎

Confirming the incident, the state Public Relations Officer, PRO, Mr. Abiodun Osifo, said the night guard’s corpse was evacuated by policemen from Aideyan police station and deposited at a morgue.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Austin, the second guard, was not known as at press time.
