Suspected robber shot dead in attempt to snatch lady’s handbag in Lagos

A suspected armed robber on Thursday was shot dead by a mobile Policeman guarding a company in the Apapa area of Lagos state during an attempt to snatch a woman’s handbag, the Nation reports.

The policeman, Corporal Ayeni Adetayo, approached the suspected robber who was on a motorcycle with his accomplice and targeted their victim.

When the duo noticed Adetayo moving towards them, they shot at him and injured him. The policeman in response, opened fire on them and one of the robbers died, while the other fled on their motorcycle.

The incident happened around Coconut Bus stop, Trinity, in Apapa.

Confirming the incident, the state police command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the suspect had been under watch.

The spokesperson said, “A pistol and seven rounds of ammunition were recovered from the deceased.

“Corporal Ayeni Adetayo posted to Micura Service Limited, Apapa, while on duty noticed two men on motorcycle trying to snatch a bag from a woman.

“On sighting the situation, the policeman moved towards the scene but the armed robber at the back of the Okada opened fire on the policeman and in a shootout that ensued, the robber died, while the rider of the Okada fled.

“The policeman sustained gunshot injury at the abdominal area.

“The suspect has been on the watch list of the command in the last two months.

“Effort is on to track the rider who is at large, while the policeman is receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The deceased specialised in snatching bags from women mostly those from banks,” Badmos added.
