The governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, got the shock of his life at the weekend when his convoy was attacked by hoodlums suspected to be hired political thugs in Ilase, Obokun Local Government Area of the state.
Aregbesola was at Ibokun and Ilase in continuation of the campaign activities for candidates on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, when the incident occurred.
During the ensuing confusion, several APC members were allegedly injured with posters of contestants, APC flags and the podium on which the governor was to address the gathering were also damaged.
The hoodlums, who were armed with dangerous weapons, fired several gunshots into the air to scare aware the APC crowd who were waiting for the arrival of the governor, before destroying flags, posters and campaign podium.
An eye witness disclosed that a female member of the APC, who had her ear slashed with machete, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
The shocked governor, who later returned to the campaign ground described what he saw on ground as callous and condemnable.
He called on security agencies to investigate what he termed as an unprovoked attack, calling on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP “to desist from the ignoble act. “We, as a party, are responsible and peace-loving. We are loved by the people. It is those who do not have electoral value that will attack the same people they ought to patronise for votes,” Aregbesola said.
