An Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, and two other personnel of the force were on Tuesday shot dead while foiling an alleged abduction of the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Jerry Needam by some unidentified gunmen.
Needam in a statement commended the bravery of the policemen deployed to rescue him during the attempted kidnap.
He said the policemen engaged the heavily armed kidnappers in a fierce gun duel that lasted for several hours.
The Special Adviser however alleged that his political opponents were behind the attempted kidnap and attempt on his life.
Needam disclosed that two other policemen and his security guard sustained bullet wounds during the gun battle, adding that the wounded were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
