Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen yesterday invaded Girei Local Government Area, LGA of Adamawa State, killing the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Okozie Okereofor, in charge of Vunokilang Police Station, some policemen attached to him and 60 others.
DAILY POST gathered that the late DPO was transferred from Okigwe in Imo State and had only spent two months in the command.
The 200 gunmen, who sketchy reports say were suspected Boko Haram insurgents, invaded four towns, Dikajam, Wunamokoh, Taboungo and Demsare in the said LGA and parts of Fawore, killing people indiscriminately.
The police spokesman, Othman Abubakar, confirming the killings, said the DPO and his men were attacked on official duty by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The spokesman noted that bodies of the police officer and others have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
Abubakar added that reports indicated that the attackers looted the villagers’ foodstuff and livestock before setting their homes ablaze.
