A suspected cable thief, Tamaria Chavwuko Thursday escaped with serious injuries after he was lynched and confessed to have stolen armoured cable at the residence of one Chief Butler Magege in Aladja community, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.
DAILY POST reports that the suspect was apprehended by some Aladja community youths who were returning from vigil in the early hours of today.
The armoured cable stolen by the suspect were to be used for the ongoing Operation Restore Aladja light by the Delta State Government.
The suspect was caught by the youths allegedly in the act and was beaten to a pulp. But for the quick intervention of Aladja community vigilante, he would have been killed by an angry mob.
The mob expressed their angry because for over two years, the Aladja community has been without electricity until Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa moved to restore power in the area.
The mob told the vigilante that they prefer to kill the suspected thief instead of allowing him plunge the community into darkness.
Prior to the arrival of security agents to the scene, the suspect, Tamaria Chavwuko said,”it is the devil that misled me into stealing the cable” even as he managed to escape.
The President of Aladja Community Council, Mr. Elias Dogene, in a chat with DAILY POST, confirmed the report.
Dogene, who was represented by the Assistant Secretary of Aladja Community Council, said,”The suspect was caught by some youths but he escaped before police arrived the scene.”
It was gathered that a cleric had recently warned the suspected cable thief to remove his hands from evil before he drags the name of his family in the mud.
Tamaria is an indigene of Oviri quarters in Aladja community.
