Suspected Boko Haram members assassinate two PDP leaders in Borno

Less than a week of President Goodluck Jonathan’s controversial visit to Borno state, suspected Boko Haram members Wednesday night killed two prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state.

The victims, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Gula, the PDP zonal Vice Chairman for Southern Borno, and Hajia Gambo, PDP woman leader, Shehuri Ward in Maiduguri, were shot dead in their homes.

The death of the politicians who sources said played actives roles during President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit, has shocked PDP members in the state.

Dailypost sources say jittery political bigwigs fled to Abuja as soon as they got wind of the assassination.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting last week in the North-east state, Jonathan announced that there would be no amnesty for faceless terrorists.

His statement is seen as a response to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, who advised the Federal Government to grant amnesty to Boko Haram members, same way the late President Umaru Yar’Adua acted during the Niger Delta uprising, spare-headed by some militants.

But the group has since replied that its members are not “ghosts”, promising more violent attacks in the region.

Isa Gusau, the special adviser on Media to Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, confirmed the killings but dismissed it had to with the President’s visit.

In the meantime, the state police command has refused to confirm or deny the incident, saying they will make comment at the appropriate time.
