Super Eagles CHAN 2016 performance not enough to measure Oliseh – Okocha

Ex-international, Austin “Jay Jay’’ Okocha, says the Super Eagles’ performance at the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN) is not enough yardstick for measuring Sunday Oliseh’s worth.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the home-based eagles crashed out of the championship in Rwanda on Tuesday, after finishing third in Group C after a lone goal defeat by Guinea in last group match.

Okocha, a former Super Eagles’ Captain, told NAN on Wednesday that Oliseh needed more time to build a formidable Super Eagles squad.

“For Sunday Oliseh, he is my friend, he is my colleague; I think he has got all it takes to get us back on track.

“We don’t need to use the CHAN to judge him, we just need to encourage him, support him and let him do his thing.

“Hopefully, he is the right person to take us to where we want to be.’’

According to him, Oliseh can still qualify the country for the 2017 Africa Nations Cup and the 2018 World Cup billed for Gabon and Russia respectively.

“The way forward is to accept our fate; we have to accept first of all that we are no longer who we used to be.

“We have to humble ourselves and realise that we are starting afresh and once we accept our fate at the moment, I think we will qualify.’’

He noted that the country’s latest position on FIFA ranking which placed Nigeria 66th in the world and 14th in Africa, was a big challenge to the country’s football managers. (NAN)
