Gus Poyet has been sacked as Sunderland coach, after Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa at home.

The former Brighton manager replaced Paolo Di Canio in October 2013 and successfully guided the club to safety, while also reaching the Capital One Cup final, where they were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City.

However, Poyet has been unable to stop the rot at the Stadium of Light this season, with the Black cats languishing in 17th place in the Premier League after 29 games.

“I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season’s ‘great escape’ and cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan,” Chairman Ellis Short said, while confirming Poyet’s dismissal.

“Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table. We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.”

Sunderland are reportedly looking for a temporary replacement, to step in and halt the club’s slide towards relegation places.
