Respected monarch and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Thursday, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, called on traditional rulers in the country not to be involved in partisan politics, stressing that staying away from politics would help sustain the dignity and respect of traditional institutions in Nigeria.

The traditional ruler said this during a condolence visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, over the recent inferno that gutted his palace.

He said: “Once we put our eyes and minds in partisan politics, we lose respect. Government believes in us and in the traditional institution and that is the reason we have to be apolitical.”

Sultan called on the need for other monarchs across the country to maintain good relationship, saying, “It is left for us to strengthen the ties existing between us by being good leaders.”

The monarch while lamenting that History was gradually becoming irrelevant to educationists who have removed it from the school curriculum, added that it was not the best as coming generations would lose touch of their cultural heritage.
