Sultan of Sokoto and President-General Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Sunday June 25 equivalent of Shawwal 1 Sallah.
Declaring the new moon Saturday night at his Palace in Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar said the new moon was sighted in parts of the country including Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
He, therefore, urged Muslims all over Nigeria to cease to fast as no one is permitted to fast on Sallah day.
The Sultan congratulated the Muslims for successful completion of the monthlong fasting period and urged them to keep alive the lessons if Ramadan even after fasting is over.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has declared Monday, June 26 and Tuesday, June 27 as Public Holiday to mark Eid el Fitr.
Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja.
He enjoined all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general to use the occasion of the celebration for sober reflection and pray for peace, unity and progress of the nation in its march to nationhood.
