The Senate on Tuesday observed a minute of silence to mourn victims of flood in parts of the country over the weekend following torrential downpour.
More than 15 persons were feared killed in Tafa and Suleja Local Government Areas of Niger State after fierce flood ravaged several homes and farmlands.
In Lekki and Victoria Island area of Lagos, hundreds of residents were sacked from their homes by flood.
The Senate calls on the Federal Government to embark on emergency intervention measure through the release of funds from ecological funds for the construction of drainage system in the affected states.
The Senate sympathises with the government of both Niger and Lagos State that were ravaged over the weekend by the flood.
The Upper legislative chamber observed that despite early weather forecast and warnings; the flood disaster continues to wreck serious havoc in its trail.
It called on the Federal Government to immediately send relief materials through the National Emergency Management Agency [NEMA] to affected areas; asking it to grant support to ensure repairs of damaged infrastructures.
The Senate also urged Nigeria Meteorological Agency {NIMET} to intensify its weather forecasts, making sure that such forecasts are translated into local languages.
