Students under punishment escape death as two-storey building collapses in Ilorin

Tragedy was averted on Wednesday morning as four students of a secondary school escaped death after a two-storey building under construction collapsed on them.

The incident reportedly happened on Opeyemi Street, in the Saw Mill area of Alagbado in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Although the name of the school was not mentioned, the Punch gathered that the school uniforms of the students had yellow stripped shirts and aqua green shorts.

Reports allege that one of the teachers of the students, identified only as Muritala, alleged to be in the habit of engaging school boys in menial jobs, had brought them to the building when the building collapsed at about 9am.

According to an eyewitness, “The teacher is a son of the owner of the building. The teacher is in the habit of taking the students to the building site for menial jobs. The students were rescued and taken to a nearby building where water was poured on them.

“Muritala also took the four male students through the back door after they were calm enough and took them back to school,” the unnamed witness added, claiming that students were usually brought to the building as a form of punishment.
