A 60 year-old man identified as Ige Oyinleye was at the weekend burnt to death inside his room in Ita-Ogbolu, the headquarters of Akure North local government area of Ondo State.
According to a source in the town, the deceased, who was suffering from stroke, met his death inside his room by mid-night.
The fire reportedly started when a candle placed beside his bed fell on the bedsheet and thereafter burnt the whole room down, killing the deceased who, as a result of his health condition could not get out of the room and also had nobody to rescue him.
The source explained that Oyinleye, a father of six has been suffering from the ailment for the past two years and since then he has relocated to Ita-Ogbolu, his home town, from Akure where he lived with his family.
Since he returned home with the illness, only the deceased was alleged to have been kept inside the room while his wife and children live in Akure, the state capital.
But it was learnt that his wife, identified as Funke used to bring food for him on daily basis.
One of the residents of the community, Bayo Isiaka who spoke to journalists on the incident, stated that he and some other people rushed to the house when they discovered that smoke was coming out of the deceased’s room, adding that though they were able to save the building from burning completely but the occupant of the room, Oyinleye had already burnt to ashes in the room.
According to him, “we learnt that the wife as usual was around to give her husband food and before she returned to Akure, there was no light; the woman put on a candle which she placed beside her husband but she forgot to quench the candle before she left for Akure.
“It was at the middle of the night that the candle fell on the bed and since the man cannot walk, the fire met him on the bed and burnt him with the bed”.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Wole Ogodo said he had not been briefed on the incident as at press time.
