The Ondo State government at the weekend assured residents that the strange disease that broke out in Ode Irele, Irele local government area, has been completely eradicated.
Over 20 people lost their lives due to the outbreak.
Medical practitioners, however, say the cause of the disease was methanol poison consumed by the victims.
Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, at a briefing, attributed the success in containing the disease to the efforts of his Ministry, the National Agency for Food Administration, Drugs and Control (NAFDAC) and other stakeholders.
“For the past 14 days, we have not recorded a single case of methanol poison in this state, we have sensitised the people of Ode Irele on the consumption of the local gin, ogogoro, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
“I want to authoritatively tell the whole world today that the Ode Irele outbreak has completely come to an end”, he said.
He confirmed that 33 people were afflicted with the strange disease, out of which 23 lost their lives.
The remaining 10 are alive and currently receiving treatment at the hospitals in the state.
He reiterated the state government’s position that the consumption of ogogoro (local gin) led to the outbreak of the disease.
The Ondo government has since banned its consumption.
