The Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) has warned the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor to stop using CAN officials to attack Muslim leaders.
The group was reacting to the recent verbal attack on the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar and the Secretary-General of the council Prof. Ishaq Oloyede by an official of CAN, Sunday Oibe.
Spokesman of the Ummah (community) Alhaji Femi Abbas while reacting to Oibe’s comment said the statement was bellicose and uncharacteristic of CAN.
“The ‘press rerelease’ was apparently issued by a clique of Christian charlatans who are masquerading in the cloak of religion within CAN.
“Ordinarily, the CAN we know very well which consists of decent gentlemen and women of dignity would not have issued such an unguarded statement especially at this festival period of Eid-el Fitr when congratulatory message from Nigerian Christian brethren to Nigerian Muslim Faithful was as usual expected”, it said.
The spokesman said: “Thus, we refuse to believe that such a reckless statement attacking the personality of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of NSCIA as well as that of the NSCIA Secretary-General was issued by CAN.
“Issuing such a baseless and inflammatory press statement to attack the topmost leadership of the Nigerian Muslim Ummah at this time confirms the fictitious source of the obnoxious Press Statement.”
The MUSWEN officials urged the NSCIA to maintain its usual cool-headedness and maturity in ignoring the statement which it said lacked value.
