Standing rules forgery: Senate threatens showdown, summons AGF

The Senate presided by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu on Tuesday has described as meddlesomeness by the Executive Arm of government, invitation served on the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, by the Federal High Court.

The motion which was moved by Senator Dino Melaye(APC), Kogi West Senatorial District after almost three hours closed door meeting, explained that the issue of Senate Standing Rules remains an internal matters, wondering why the executive arm of government led by Muhammadu Buhari became interested in what happens without any complaint from those concerned.

While describing Buhari’s action as autocratic, he said his government had fallen short of democratic norms, reasoning that the executive arm was yet to come to terms with the tenets of democracy.

Melaye, particularly accused President Buhari of not addressing fundamental problems confronting the nation, but going after the Senate.

“Mr Senate President, unemployment is skyrocketing, prices of goods are on the increase, foreign reserves is depleting, the value of Naira is falling day by day, Nigerians are passing through pains and instead of the President to address these issues, they are disturbing the Senate,” he pointed.

He added that the executive was arrogating itself with powers it does not have, pointing that the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has no right to interlope into the National Assembly leadership by asking the court to arraign Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu.

“The current attempt to arraigned the Senate Leadership is a smokescreen to muzzle the Senate into becoming an appendage of the executive,” he added.

While contributing, Senator Albert Akpan, Hamma Misau, Ibrahim Gobir supported of the motion, explaining that the Attorney-General of the Federation was working with external forces to bring Nigerian Senate down.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu on his part, said the opposition PDP Senators had supported steps taken by Buhari-led administration even when it was obvious that some of those steps were wrong.

While expressing disappointment at the APC government, he explained that some of the Ministers that Buhari recommended were unqualified and incompetent, but they resolved to allow it in order to deepen harmony in the country.

“Distinguished Senators, prior to my being a Senators, I anticipated to see maturity in the way things were done here, but I’m very disappointed that the APC was not moving the nation forward, despite that the PDP has been supportive,” Anyanwu said.

The Senate, therefore, resolved that the Attorney General of the Federation be summoned to appear before it to explain why arraignment of Senate President and Deputy does not amount to incompetence and gross misconduct on his part.

Ekweremadu also concluded that the Senate Standing Rules in question was not forged, insisting that it was authentic.
