The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), University of Ibadan chapter, on Monday, joined their colleagues across the country to commence a three-day warning strike.
The warning strike, according to SSANU, was to intimate the Federal Government of its inability to fulfil the 10-year agreement it had with the union over several issues relating to the welfare of its members.
DAILY POST recalls that the union had last week vowed to embark on a three-day nationwide protest.
National Public Relations Officer of the union, Mr. Abdussobur Salaam had said that the union would embark on a three-day nationwide protest and warning strike from December 17 to 19 to press home its demands.
The Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of SSANU, Dr. Wale Akinremi, while addressing members of the union during an emergency congress and peaceful protest around the premises of the university, said it was unfortunate that the Federal Government as the custodian of the rule of law has failed to uphold the institution.
Akinremi disclosed that the protest and the warning strike were to sensitise both the university management and the Federal Government of the plight of its members.
During the protest, members of the union, who were chanting solidarity songs, carried placards with inscriptions such as: “respect rule of law”, “respect court verdict” “reinstate university staff school teachers of university on payroll now”.
Others are: “FG stop provoking strikes”, “respect mutual agreement, pay your workers”, “our earned allowances, our legitimate right”, “all responsible nations fund education appropriately, why is Nigeria an exception?”.
The peaceful protest, which commenced at the front of the Senate chamber, took the protesters to some locations within the campus and terminated at the main gate of the institution.
