The Chairman of South-South Governors Forum, Liyel Imoke of Cross River State, on Wednesday in Abuja said the group was in support of the state of emergency declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.
Imoke in an interview with State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa said the Forum did not only endorse the state of emergency, but also encouraged the President to be firm on security.
According to him, “He has the support of the National Security Adviser and the National Security Council on the declaration of the state of emergency.
“His actions are positive, the democratic institutions are still in place and I think it is very significant and commendable.
“I think it is for us now to throw our support behind the President, encourage him in dealing with this insurgency and ensure that those states are returned to normalcy.”
When asked of his position on the demand by the North for power to return to the region, Imoke said that every region had the right to make such demand, yet was in support of continuity.
He said: “Everybody has the right to agitate and to contest. This is the first time we will have a president from the minority and I think it speaks volume about the maturity of our democracy and I think we need to sustain it.”
