South East lawmakers reject branding of IPOB as a terrorists organisation

South East lawmakers of both Chambers of the National Assembly have rejected the branding of Biafra agitators (IPOB) as a terrorist organization.

In a statement issued and signed by the caucus Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Hon. Chukwuka Onyema, they noted that the development if allowed, would have dare consequences on innocent and law abiding citizens of the South East.

Condemning all forms of terrorism, they, however, explained that IPOB activities have never assumed terrorism by any standard.

“We condemn all acts of terrorism. In the case of IPOB, we reject its branding as a terrorist organization by military authorities”, they said.

“We take this position because of the implications of such branding to innocent citizens from the area who may be affected by the consequences”, they insisted.

While commending South East governors for their prompt Intervention, the group advised the Federal Government to look into those issues that resulted to agitations in the zone and other geopolitical zones.

Affirming their commitment to the unity of Nigeria, they urged Nigerians to desist from hate speeches, adding that it was time for the nation to be anchored on justice, equity and fair play.

While admonishing IPOB to suspend its activities, lawmakers promised to meaningfully engage the parliament on issues affecting the South East States once it reconvenes from recess.
