South Africa vs Nigeria: Why we drew 1- 1 against Super Eagles – Baxter, Bafana Bafana coach

Stuart Baxter, Head Coach of the South Africa national football team, the Bafana Bafana, has revealed why his side failed to clinch the maximum three points in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) second leg qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

He said the Bafana Bafana did not play according to the instructions he gave them to secure a win over the Super Eagles.

Speaking to journalists at a post-match briefing on Saturday, an apparently disappointed Baxter said his boys showed signs of nerves, didn’t get their movements right and failed to run the Super Eagles away.

“We have taken off four points from the Super Eagles. The only goal we have conceded so far is an own goal.

“I am disappointed that we weren’t braver.

“We said at half time that we would give them (Super Eagles) problems when we can play through, get our movements, run them away and challenge them one-to-one.

“Instead, in the second half, we started going long, really long. That’s a sign of nerves (as through) we didn’t want to concede a goal.

“I had wanted their balls to be played in deep runs with good delivery,” Baxter said.

He, however, said despite the disappointing outcome of the match, the South Africans will fight to win their crucial game against the Libyans.

In Baxter’s words: “I am a little bit disappointed at the moment but the fight goes on.”
