The Lagos State Government has disclosed that some imported contaminated poultry produce which were seized and buried by the Nigeria Customs Service in Badagry area of the state, have been exhumed by some people with the aim of selling them.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Toyin Suarau, however, warned residents against the consumption of poultry produce that are in circulation at present in the state as they pose serious health risk.
Suarau made this disclosure on Sunday when officials of the National Orientation Agency, on the directive of the Federal Government, visited him as part of the sensitisation of Lagosians on the dangers of consuming the contaminated food and to draw the attention of the public to the dangers inherent in buying and consuming these poultry produce.
The Commissioner also said among the contaminated produce, were chicken and turkey, adding that the products had been laced with chemicals such as formalin, which is poisonous and could lead to slow death.
While adding that the poisonous produce was not as nutritious as freshly processed poultry meat because imported poultry meat had been preserved for months and years with dangerous chemicals, he assured that the state government would work with the Federal Government to ensure that the sensitisation exercise was successful.
