SOKAPU calls for El-Rufai’s arrest, prosecution over alleged hate speech

The President, Southern Kaduna Peopples’ Union, SOKAPU, Barr. Solomon Musa, has called for the arrest and prosecution of Kaduna State Governor, Mal. Nasir el-Rufai over alleged hate speech.

Governor el-Rufai had reigned abuses on Senators Suleiman Othman Hukunyi, Shehu Sani and Danjuma Laah and reportedly asked citizens to attack the Senators.

Speaking at a Southern Kaduna Peace and Reconciliation Committee meeting with various stakeholders organized by Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, the SOKAPU President said there was the urgent need to prosecute the Governor to serve as deterrent to trouble makers in the State.

Barr. Musa, who doubles as Chairman of Southern Kaduna Peace and Reconciliation Committee, SKPRC, said although the forth coming local government elections in the State was the vocal point of the meeting much was still desired in combating insecurity in the State.

Musa regretted the use of inciteful words, especially by highly placed politicians like Governor Nasir el-Rufai in the state, which according to him was capable of fermenting violence, adding that security agencies should hold such individuals accountable.

“The Governor choice of language is akin to given an express order to people to carry out violence. He is the chief security officer of the state that should not incite violence among the citizens of the State. Though, he might be under immunity, It is however needful for the security agencies to do professional job as far as hate speech is concern,” he said.

He said the Nigeria security agencies needed more funding, given the huge sacrifices they make by putting their lives on the line and that they also needed to be given leverage to operate based on professional provision.

“Until the security agencies operate dispassionately and earn the confidence of the people, a lot is yet to be done,” he explained.

Stakeholders who spoke at the event condemned the governor’s statement which they said had the tendencies of breeding conflict in the State.
