Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, has admitted that he is under more pressure, after former manager Sir Alex Ferguson publicly backed him.
Ferguson described the Dutchman as a “great coach” and said he will prove a success at Old Trafford.
“Once they get the players back they’ll be fine,” Ferguson said. “When he gets the best players back, you watch United, because he’s a great coach, he’ll do well.”
Van Gaal thanked Ferguson for the praise, but said that he cannot afford to fail after the recommendation from the Scot.
“I know Sir Alex and when you come to Manchester United you hope that he shall support you,” Van Gaal said.
“When he is supporting you – because he’s not only doing that this week but in other conferences he gave – he showed a lot of confidence and belief in me and that I need as a coach.
“As manager of Manchester United you need belief and support of managers such as Sir Alex but also Sir Bobby Charlton and David Gill. They have the belief and I’m happy with that, because then you can work in an easier way.
“But it’s also a pressure because he believes in you and it gives you that pressure that you have to to get results, because it’s not so easy to win the Premier League matches.”
