The dumping of an unidentified three-month-old baby at the waste site along Asaba-Benin expressway, has unsettled residents in that environment.
It was gathered that the infant was allegedly dumped at the refuse site around 4:30am by a yet-to-be-identified person, who immediately disappeared into thin air.
But a source, Festus Owie, a mechanic who claimed to had seen the baby being dumped, told DAILY POST “I was in my workshop very early morning when a woman with an escort holding a gun, came to dump the baby, I was afraid not to shout because of the man with a gun, they then disappeared after dumping the baby”
DSP Andrew Aniamaka, police spokesman in Delta state confirmed that the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, adding that “we took the baby to orphanage home for now, we are investigating the incident, it’s painful, and unfortunate”.
Some of the residents of the area, who besieged the dump site, were seen in tears as they rained curses on the perpetrators.
One of the residents, Uche Franklin said, “This is why God will continue to make some women barren, just imagine what a woman did? God will not forgive her anywhere she goes.”
Investigations revealed that people in the recent times take advantage of the night and early hours to dump all manner of refuse including sanitary pads at the dump site, causing the place to emit offensive odour posing health hazards to neighbours and road users.
Motorists plying the road, who spoke to DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, said “the emitting odour from the dump site, indeed, is some thing else. We drive through the place with speed, the odour is too much, we want government to do something about it”.
But the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr John Nani, who spoke to DAILY POST, said “We already have those who will bring to book illegal waste dumpers, we are doing every thing possible to make the site good, the odour would soon be a thing of the past. The new task-force will bring sanity to the dump site, as for the baby dumped, we will ensure the mother is brought to book.”
