The Restart PDP Project, a pressure group in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan was misled into supporting Ali Modu Sheriff to become the party’s National Chairman.
The group, which described the former Bornu State governor as a serial decampee, stated that the opposition party has no moral justification to select Sheriff as its chairman.
Convener of the group, Emmanuel Nwosu told journalists at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, that the choice of Sheriff as chairman cannot stand, noting that the various state party chairmen had rejected him as well as other party members.
Nwosu maintained that the party parades many experienced and loyal party members that could have been made the PDP chairman, insisting that there was little or no consultation before the appointment of Sheriff was made.
He said, “The people that planned and masterminded the ‘coup’ misled former president Goodluck Jonathan and the governors. There was a meeting a few weeks back, I was privy to that meeting.
“A member was asked to brief the party and this young man deceived the party that there was no motion that struck out Uche Secondus’ case. The group told a blatant lie and misled the whole party.
“I am certain that Jonathan having been engaged in various international assignments, would not have been properly briefed. I am sure Jonathan would withdraw support, if any for Sheriff, this shenanigan will not stand.”
The group pointed out that it was not throwing its weight behind any candidate, insisting that it only wanted the right thing to be done, adding that it was laughable and insulting to make a new party member the PDP chairman.
Nwosu, who claimed that Sheriff was not in the picture when suggestions were being made for the leadership position of the party, insisted that the former APC Board of Trustees Chairman lacked the leadership capacity to move the party forward, stressing that what the PDP needed is a man who would galvanise it to success.
“Having been a long time party man, who knows the inner workings of Wadata plaza, Modu sheriff will leave and that is very soon. What the party needs is a leadership that would galvanise the party to success, it is clear that Modu Sheriff does not have the capacity to move the party forward and the party has no moral justification to make a serial political decampee its leader,” he concluded.
