Former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central in the Senate, Shehu Sani has reacted to the United States government’s visa restrictions on individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process during the last general elections.

A spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Ms Morgan Ortagus, who announced this in a statement on Tuesday, said the action applied to those responsible for election-related violence.

Ortagus said the unnamed individuals had “operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights”.

Sani, while reacting, described the visa restriction by the US government as a welcome development and urged other countries to toe the same path.

According to him, the latest decision indicates that “national laws aren’t enough deterrent”.

Sani, on his Twitter page, wrote: “The announcement by the US to impose visa restrictions on persons who ‘undermine democracy’ by their role in the last elections is a welcome development; other nations should emulate this.

“Its clear that national laws aren’t enough deterrent.”
