The Anambra State Police Command on Thursday arrested a serving member of the National Youth Corps Scheme, NYSC, for alleged armed robbery and kidnapping.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Ali Okechukwu, made this disclosure to newsmen while parading the unnamed corps member, alongside nine other suspects at the Command’s headquarters.
The PPRO said the arrest was made possible by information volunteered by the public to officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.
“The corps member is currently serving in Anambra State and has been involved in armed robbery and kidnapping in and around the state.
“The corps member had on March 22, conspired with another suspect and broke into the Igwe’s Lodge at Abagana and robbed students of the National Open University of their handsets, laptops and cash of N92, 000.
“On March 6 at about 2100hrs, four kidnappers, who hailed from Obosi in Idemili Local Government, lured their victim (a young lady), out of Onitsha Sports Club, via Facebook to Oguta Road in Onitsha, where she was kidnapped at an uncompleted building.
“The victim was also kept for days until the ransom of N500, 000 was paid.
“The victim was stripped naked and video-recorded after robbing her of a Samsung Galaxy phone, blue touch screen phone and wrist watch all valued at N90, 000.
“One locally made short gun with live cartridge and an axe was recovered from them,” Okechukwu said.
The PPRO noted that the suspects will be charged to court soon, adding that the corps member had confessed to the crime.
