Serbia beat Brazil to win Under-20 World Cup

Nemanja Maksimovic scored the winning goal deep into extra time, as Serbia shocked Brazil 2-1 in the final of the U-20 World Cup on Saturday.

There were no goals until the 70th minute, when Stanisa Mandic capitalized on slack defending to fire Serbia in front. Andreas Pereira produced a moment of individual magic to level the scores.

The game looked set for a penalty shootout, until the Serbians broke at speed in the 117th minute, as Stefan Ilic and Andrija Zivkovic combined to send Maksimovic free.

It is the country’s first title as an independent nation and they have goalkeeper Pedrag Rajkovic to thank, as he pulled off some fine saves to deny the South Americans.

The defeat also means Brazil is still chasing a sixth U-20 title.
