SERAP reacts as Buhari reduces examination fees for JAMB, NECO, others

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari Government over reduction of examination fees for Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB and NECO.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu announced reduction of the fees after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting on Wednesday.

According to him, the JAMB fee for the UTME will reduce from N5,000 to N3,500, the Senior Secondary School fee charge by NECO will reduce from N11,350 to N9,850 and the Basic Education certificate by NECO will reduce from N5,500 to N4,000.

According to him, the new charges would become effective from January 2019.

Reacting, SERAP commended the decision by the federal government.

The group in a post on its official Twitter page urged all state governors to implement such decision and reduce cost of education in respective states.

The post read: “The reduction of examination fees for JAMB,NECO is a welcome development.

“We urge all state governors to urgently cut the cost of education in their states and improve access to quality education for children from poor and disadvantaged background.”
