The Senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial zone, Senator Shehu Sani, has donated the sum of N1 million to the victims of the recent fire disaster in Railway station market in Kaduna.
The Senator has also promised to foot the school bill of the children of a victim, who lost his life in the inferno.
Speaking at the scene of the fire incident, Shehu Sani blamed the Railway management for the incident.
According to him, the former location of the market was the ideal place, adding that for almost nine years now, the former location had been lying fallow and had now become abode for snakes, scorpions and rats.
“I am here to sympathize with the victims of the Railway Market fire disaster. The market has a historical significance and it is a market that is widely known and patronized by many. The fire disaster that led to the loss of one life and loss of properties worth millions of Naira is unfortunate, and we shall do whatever we can to assist the victims.
“This incident did not only affect those that lost their properties but also all those who reside in Kaduna and even the nation at large. So, all of us are affected. So, I am donating the sum of N1million to the victims of the fire. I am also taking over the education of the children of the man who lost his life in the incident for two years.
“I blame the Railway management for the incident and for driving the traders from the former location of the market which is adjacent to the current place. That former location of the market was the ideal place because it was spacious and big.
“This place that got burnt is a small place; large number of people are compressed into the small place and cannot move and trade freely due to the compression. So, there was no how a fire incident will not destroy all the shops because everything is too jam-packed.
“Annoyingly, for almost nine years now that the traders were chased away by the Railway management, that land has been lying fallow and has now become bushy and abode for snakes, scorpions and rat,” he lamented.
He called on the Railway management to open up the former location so that the traders could return to the place, adding that no one should attempt to use the fire incidence as an excuse to relocate the traders from the place completely.
The Senator said he had called the attention of the Minister of Transportation to the incident and had asked him to send delegates to the place and to render assistance to the traders.
Senator Sani advised the traders who lost their properties to work hard and pray to God for quick restoration rather than resort to begging or doing other degrading things due to their present predicament.
