The embattled Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Ovie Omo-Agege has apologised to the Senate over his comment against a reordered bill that was passed by the Senate last week.
The bill which followed a conference report of the Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the House of Representatives and Senate was adopted by the red chambers.
The lawmaker did not only oppose the sequence of election on the floor in the course of debate, but made comments that the bill was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
He made the comment when 10 lawmakers (including himself) staged a walkout to address a press on the development, Wednesday last week.
The group led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu claimed that lawmakers against the bill were 59, insisting that the passage of sequence of elections bill by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki was wrong.
However, at the Tuesday’s plenary, Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial district raised a point of Order to suspend Ovie Omo-Agege for what he called derogatory statement against the Senate.
The order was upheld, and referred to Senate Committee on Ethics, Public Petitions and Priviledge to revert in two weeks.
Midway into Wednesday’s plenary, the embattled lawmaker, through order 43, asked that he be forgiven for the comment:.
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, yesterday, Senator Dino Melaye raised a point of order over my comment last week that the sequence of election was targetted against President Buhari. I wish to apologise for my comment”, he said.
Responding, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu asked the appropriate Committee to expeditiously dispense investigations bearing in mind the lawmaker’s apology.
