Senator Marafa accuses Saraki of tyranny

Senator Kabiru Marafa today accused the Senate President, Bukola Saraki of Legislative tyranny.

This is coming at the backdrop of what he said was not in consonance with the standing rules of the Senate, that in the appointment of Senate Committee leadership, which was announced last week, due process was not followed.

“There was a clear breach of due process and the exercise should be rejected with immediate effect,”he noted.

Citing relevant sections of Standing rules, he submitted that the Committee were not properly constituted ‘ab initio’, hence their action vis-a-vis their recommendation that led to the Constitution of Committees as it stands were null and void.

He emphasise that the Senate was free to regulate itself and the point of Order which he raised on the floor was for reasons of correcting the anomaly perpetrated by Saraki.

He asked the Senate President to apologize to Nigerians for defying and abusing powers at his disposal meant to strengthen democracy rather than causing confusion in the Senate.

“Senate President should apologize to Nigerians for abuse of powers of the Senate,” he said.

He expoused that those special Committees were the right of the Senate who should be part of selection Committee, but since they were not part of selection Committee, those Committee leaders remains Saraki’s private Committees and not that of the Senate, pointing that he expects Nigerians to rise to the challenge of asking questions on what is happening in their Senate.

Responding to questions on whether he will resign from being Chairman of Committee on National Population, he noted that no Committee was constituted legitimately, so they don’t exist.

“How can we talk of resigning as Committee Chairman when Committee does not exist at all, I don’t recognize that any Committee exist at all,” he said.

Marafa assured that he was not opposing the leadership out of sentiments.
