Senator gives warning over implication of excess checkpoints in Kano State

A former Governor of Kano state and a serving Senator, Alhaji Kabiru Gaya, has warned the Federal Government that the indiscriminate check points mounted everywhere in Kano was capable of causing serious tension in the state.

Senator Gaya, representing Kano South Senatorial District, the largest in the country, with 16 Local Government Areas, issued the protest while speaking to journalists whom he hosted to a dinner party on Christmas Eve at Ibro Grand Hotel, Abuja.

He said a situation whereby several armed personnel were deployed to maintain security, gives rise to the perception that the state was largely insecure, adding that the country was drifting as a result of “ineffective leadership.”

The Senator stated that the people of his home State were already getting restless over the latest security issue in the state, which he said may lead to mass revolt by the people.

“There are too many security checkpoints in Kano State and hardly could one drive for more than a kilometer before you are ordered out of your vehicle and thoroughly checked and this takes a lot of time of the people. If the development is not quickly reviewed, it would soon lead to mass revolt by the restless people of Kano State.”

He frowned at instances whereby, “even Assistant Directors in the Federal Civil Service can refuse to obey the summons of National Assembly members”, warning that the country was fast moving towards a revolution as predicted by the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The lawamaker promised to introduce a Bill to ensure that resolutions of the National Assembly are respected in future.

The former governor then pleaded with the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the Kano State Governor, to reduce the security checkpoints to a reasonable level “as it is creating havoc in Kano State”
