Following the resolutions of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York wherein the post 2015 development agenda was adopted, the Senate on Thursday reiterated its commitment to domesticate the resolutions using legislative instruments.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, in his lead debate, first commended the inter parliamentary leaders from 140 countries of the world, stressing that they have shown their commitment to the service of peace and sustainable development of the world.
“I will like to appreciate the large turn out of over 180 parliamentary leaders from 140 countries of the world to deliberate on the sustainable development and peace in which the world wants,” Ndume stated.
The majority leader also disclosed that development support groups like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association have supported the Nigerian Senate immensely which he said had led to an efficient discourse in the ongoing sustainable development goals.
After various contributions, the Senate resolved to adopt the Declaration of the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and shift focus to supporting the implementation of the goals.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, commended the the team that participated in the conference, noting that Nigeria Senate would ensure that development goals were religiously implemented.
“Following this adoption, I think it is worthwhile that these goals will be religiously implemented and I want to commend the team that participated,” Saraki stated.
