Senate reacts to sack of Babachir Lawal, Ayo Oke

The Nigeria Senate on Tuesday threw weight behind the sack of former Secretary to the government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and former Director General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke.

Raising his point through order 43 of Senate rules, Deputy Senate leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah commended the the upper chamber for being courageous.

He noted that reports that finally nailed the former SGF and NIA boss emanated from the Senate.

Na’Allah maintained that the Senate had shown its commitment to dealing with corrupt public officials, promising that they would continue to do so without falling prey to sponsored protests by some gullible Nigerians.

He regretted that some public officials were consistently using protesters against the lawmakers as a result of their resolve to fight corruption.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, you recall that protesters in the heat of that corruption saga against Lawal and Oke were sleeping at the Assembly, but today, the Senate has been vindicated”, he stressed.

The lawmaker urged all relevant Committees investigating one form of corruption or the other to expedite action, adding that the fight against corruption was in the interest of the over 170 million Nigerians.

He recalled that the saga of embattled former Chairman of Presidential Task force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, started in the Senate, vowing that the chamber would chase the matter to end.

In his response, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his decision to sack the affected officials.

He noted that Senate would continue to beam its searchlight on corrupt public officials with a view to exposing them.
