In a bid to keep the memories of late heroes who stood and fought for the unity and independence of Nigeria as sovereign state; the Senate on Tuesday insisted that the reintroduction of History and Civic Education in Secondary Schools curriculum in Nigeria was imperative.
The Senate in its resolution also urged the Federal Ministry of Education to restore the subject while at the same time, calling on the African Union (AU) to set out a day to celebrate Pan Africanists in various African countries.
In a motion sponsored by Senator Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central) and seconded by Senator Ali Wakili (Bauchi South), the Lawmakers were worried that, “the struggle for the unity of Africa, as championed by the founding fathers of the African continent like Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe and others has rapidly evaporated from the psyche of the present and upcoming generation.”
While moving the motion, Senator Sani said, “Nigeria as a giant of Africa which has helped many African countries to attain self – rule, is in the need to inculcate the spirit of Pan – Africanism in the Nigerian child.”
To ensure that the country doesn’t voluntarily surrender the dream of the founding fathers of Africa and considering the strategic importance of Nigeria in global affairs in general and Africa in particular, the Senate ,therefore, resolved to support the reintroduction of History and Civic Education in school curriculum.
