Serious concerns have been raised in the Senate following the report by the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs that a whooping sum of $426 Million has been committed to IDPs as at 2016.
In a motion sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume, he expressed worries that there were extreme malnutritio in the embattled three states of the Northeast.
He further explained that the sum of N5.7billion has been expended on Health and sanitation issues, wondering what was amiss that there was no iota of improvement.
“I have observed that over N5.7billion has been donated to help the region deal with health and sanitation issues, yet, there were critical conditions and high prevalence of severe morbidity and mortality”, Ndume said.
Senator Shehu Sani in his contribution maintained that it was high time Nigeria moved away from rhetoric looking at the seriousness of humanitarian crises in IDPs.
He added that, humanitarian crises has been turned to humanitarian industry, stressing that Senate would get at elements in government who use their positions to siphon funds and think they could get away with it.
”The more we hear, the less we see and I think it is high time we moved away from rhetoric. Those in government who have converted the crises to money making industry would be got across to,” Sani posited.
Atai Aidoko representing Kogi East Senatorial District called for investigation into the amount in question, noting that it was a huge sum of money that should be investigated by the Senate.
After various contributions, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu upheld prayers of the motion that effective coordination should be initiated for the benefit of displaced persons.
