Youths from Idoma speaking area of Benue State under the aegis of ‘Idoma Youths Coalition’ and ‘Ofu K’Idoma’ have called on the Senate President, Distinguished Senator David Mark to give the needed support to Senator George Akume to enable him clinch the seat of the President of the 8th Senate.
In a joint press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, the Youths also enjoined all sons and daughters of Idomaland to rally round the Senate Minority Leader in his bid to succeed Senator Mark.
Addressing the Conference, the convener, Comrade Austin Agada eulogised the leadership qualities of Senator Mark whom he described as the “Iroko of Nigeria politics” and urged him to use his wealth of experience and his connections at the National Assembly to ensure Senator Akume became successful.
While congratulating the President-elect, Gen. Buhari and his Deputy, Prof. Osibanjo for their electoral victory, the groups also lauded the efforts of the national working committee of the All Progressive Congress, APC for zoning the position of the Senate Presidency to the North Central and called on the newly elected Senators to file behind Senator Akume on the 6th of June, when the 8th Senate would be inaugurated.
“We beg to disagree with the agitation by the North East for the same position of Senate Presidency, as Nigerians view this as the handiwork of some 5th columnists from outside the APC, who are working to break their ranks or reckless blackmails on the party as belonging to a particular religion”, the groups said.
The Youths also used the event to pass vote of confidence on Senator George Akume.
” We salute the courage and charisma of Senator (Dr.) George Akume as strong pillar of democracy who has worked tirelessly and selflessly for the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
“Akume is a man with a good track record. He is a clean and generous figure with no case of corruption hanging over him, even 8 years after leaving office as a Governor and another 8 years as a Senator, out of which he has spent 4 years as the Minority Leader of the Senate.
“We want to pass a vote of confidence on him and also unanimously endorse him for the position of the Presidency of the 8th Senate “, they submitted.
The statement issued at the end of the conference was jointly signed by Comrade Austin Agada, Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi and Comrade Caleb Abah.
