Senate Minority Leader accuses PDP of working to postpone February elections

The immediate past governor of Benue State and Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being behind the plot to postpone the general elections slated to begin from February 14, 2015 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Akume, who made the allegation in a press statement he released at the weekend, said: “I must not fail to add that the ruling PDP is the architect of this unholy and preposterous plan to postpone the forthcoming general elections, just because it has developed cold from the rising profile of the APC.”

Stressing that the hour of change has come for Nigeria, he warned that nobody, no matter highly placed, should toy with the collective destiny of Nigerians.

Wondering why such a wicked act should be contemplated, let alone declared publicly by a presidential aide and other cronies of the federal government, Akume said: “Nigerians will resist, using all lawful and legal means, this most heinous crime aimed at ingloriously terminating our hard-earned democracy.”

He held that the National Security Adviser (NSA) had no business advising INEC to postpone the elections, and regretted that the NSA could not even disclose how uncompleted distribution of Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) was posing security threats.

The former two-term governor further listed three reasons as stipulated by section 26(1) of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended which could warrant the postponement of an election to include likely serious breach of the peace, existence or occurrence of a natural disaster or existence or occurrence of other emergencies. He then insisted that the reason advanced by the NSA is not enough to back what he is demanding.
