Senate lauds NERC’s pro-people position


The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has been commended for being responsive to the yearnings of the people.

In a press statement which was issued on Monday, Senator Dino Melaye, Ad-hoc Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity stressed that the regulatory agency has demonstrated that it is responsible and sensitive to the people it serves.

“While describing the steps taken so far by NERC in response to Senate’s resolution on the issue of fixed charges as a pro-people position, Melaye said the commission has shown that it is a responsible regulatory body”, the statement said.

He noted that the fixed charge that wasrestructured following the National Assembly’s intervention by NERC would alleviate sufferings of Nigerians, hence, it will also afford them to pay exactly the amount of energy consumed.

“Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, NERC, Sam Amadi had in response to the issue of fixed charges said though it is legal, the Commission had intervened to prevent its abuse and ensure that customers are not forced to pay for what they did not consume”, he maintained.

He urged the regulatory agency to ensure that Distribution companies and others whose services have direct impact in the industry comply and also avoid sharp practices while reiterating the commitment of 8th National Assembly to total change in all facets of the economy.

“The 8th Senate is committed to change in all aspects of our national life in line as things will no longer be business and usual.” He stated.

The statement added that similar moves had been directed to the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigeria Customs Service to recover over N30billion illegal waivers which was granted to some importers in the previous administration.

“In a similar move, the Senate has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Customs Service to recover over N30billion illegal waivers granted to some rice importers by the previous administration”, the statement noted.
